Ingredients
- For the patties:
- 2 1/2 pounds ground beef
- 2 cups saltine crackers, crushed into crumbs
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- cayenne pepper, to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- flour, to taste
- For the gravy:
- 3 (10.75-ounce) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
- 1 3/4 cups milk
- 1 3/4 cups water
- 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
Directions
Step 1 -Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Step 2 -Coat a 9x3-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
Step 3 -In a bowl, combine the ground beef, the cracker crumbs, 1 1/2 cups of the milk, the Italian seasoning, the garlic powder, the cayenne, the salt, and the pepper and mix until well-blended.
Step 4 -Gently form the beef mixture into 6 or 8 equally sized patties.
Step 5 -Place the flour in a shallow bowl.
Step 6 -Lightly dredge each of the patties in the flour.
Step 7 -In a skillet with high sides over medium-high heat, cook the patties, in batches, until they are golden-brown on both sides. Internally, they will still be uncooked.
Step 8 -Place the browned patties in the prepared baking dish. If there are more than 6 patties, shingle them so they fit.
Step 9 -In a bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, the remaining milk, the water, and the parsley and mix well.
Step 10 -Evenly pour the gravy over the patties, then cover the baking dish with foil.
Step 11 -Bake the gravy-covered patties on the middle rack until the meat reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees F, about 1 hour. If the patties are layered, turn the top layer over halfway through to ensure even cooking.
Step 12 -Serve.
